When you do this, you also tell Facebook what page the user should return to after accepting. Unfortunately fb won't take the tab's URL (because that URL isn't 'owned by the app'), so you need to give it your canvas URL. BUT, on the Canvas, you can redirect the user back to the tab URL. BTW Jessica, for your app's canvas page, you could put a line of js (top.location.href) to redirect users to your Welcome tab.

Anyhow, the above is kind of hacky, but it seems to work. Also, Facebook might not like this because I don't think there's a way for a user to "remove an app" without being able to land on the app canvas page.

If you want to check out my test, click the the "test" tab/link on the left side of this page:

http://www.facebook.com/pag...

Re: Facebook: Convert your Static FMBL to iFrame – It’s not as painful as you think!

Thanks! I think that any user auths that have worked previously with iFrames will continue to work the same way, iFrames have been around for quite some time, there should be good documentation out there (I hope!)

I agree, that canvas page is messy! Also some of the language should change in the process; like mentions of tabs. The "tabs" as they exist now are totally disappearing.

Re: Facebook: Convert your Static FMBL to iFrame – It’s not as painful as you think!

This is great info, thanks Jessica! I wasn't aware that Facebook now allows iFrames in tabs (let alone will require it!). I write many Flash apps in tabs which, because of FBML, were limited (they weren't allow to run javascript, contact other servers, etc.). Any idea how apps that require user authorization will work (for example, an app that needs the user's list of friends) ? Time to test it out..

BTW - It seems a little messy to still have a Canvas URL hanging around which you'll never use if you're only creating a tab. It could confuse people if they should ever happen to find it: http://apps.facebook.com/ve...

Re: Helping vs. Selling

Thanks so much for your interest! I assumed that the iPhone would have power issues with a GPS app. I have a Blackberry and found the same using the Trimble app. I think the clear way to go is with a dedicated handheld GPS. What do you specifically like about the one you have?

Re: Backpacker Magazine gets even more social

Tim, There's lots of GPS apps out for the iPhone, some really good ones, like Gaia, geocaching, accutera, Their interfaces are great and the phone is pretty easy to read. The problem is the iPhone's GPS is not that great and you can loose signal pretty easy. Also the battery drains real fast, with the GPS on I get about 4 hours on the stock battery at most. (they do have battery case add on's that help.) Not sure about android phones. But I think you can pair an external Blue tooth GPS with them that will give better signal. (you have to hack you iPhone to use blue tooth gps) Of course a dedicated hand held GPS might be the best but they cost $$$ I have a delorme PN-40 and love it (PN-60 comes out in June) Also the Garmin Dakota 2 is nice too.

Re: How We Use Social Media

Mark, I have not explored Feedblitz much. I did review it a few months ago and just revisited it when I saw your comment. I am a Google fan and like to have as many tools in one place (my Google account) as I can. The Feedblitz video gives a good overview though. Looks like a viable option but I couldn't say which solution would be better for you. Let me know what you discover in your research. We would be interested to learn more about it too.

Re: How We Use Social Media

Tim,
Have you looked into feedblitz as a replacement of feedburner. Clients would either distribute the pres online (easiest) of download a player so they could do it directly from the desktop.

Since it's free, I would recc you give sliderocket a try, take a 1/2-1 hr and play with it. I really did find it super easy right out of the gate and I HATE upgrading software. I hate anything that takes extra time upfront, even if in the end I'm better off. I'm still using CS 1 b/c I am just that lazy. I found this to be really fun to use b/c everything just looks so great with almost no effort. The hardest thing for me has been to NOT use every bell and whistle on every slide.

Re: Product Review – Sliderocket Online Presentation Software

I would do almost anything to avoid using PowerPoint, or any Microsoft product for that matter. They are incredibly buggy which causes me endless frustration and an incredible waste of time. I make a lot of presentations for clients who live in a PC world where these products are entrenched. They also have to deliver the presentations in a variety of settings. They aren't designers and would probably resist learning a new piece of software.

I've heard of sliderocket, but haven't used it because I'm concerned about compatibility and a learning curve. I did the same thing before launching this site. I have more than 10 years in the real estate and mortgage industries with a focus on the technology that powers it. Still, when I decided to push the consulting side of our business more I spent a good 6 months listening to everyone else to see what I could learn and try to find the best entry point for what I wanted to create. I think that process is perhaps the most important for anyone trying to determine how social media fits into their business plan. Please reach out if you want help with the creation of your strategy (it's what we do!) or if you just want to discuss a topic that is important to you. Thanks for the feedback.

Re: Social Media – Where do I start?

Excellent content.
